I had this idea a few weeks ago that I purposely wanted to do in the month of March and sort of time it with the NCAA Basketball Tournament because that’s when we are aware of what a 64-team bracket looks like.

However my field of 64 would not be made up of college basketball teams but rather the best athletes, coaches, contributors and more in Ocean and Monmouth counties over the past 50 years.

Last week on shoresportsnetwork.com we solicited nominations for the Jersey Shore’s Greatest Sports Personality from 1968 to today and received hundreds of names.  Many of them are obvious: Todd Frazier, Al Leiter, Christie Pearce Rampone and Warren Wolf just to name a few.

However the process allowed us to receive names that might have been overlooked and deserve to be among those placed in our unique bracket.

Today the staff of the Shore Sports Network will be going through the lists, counting votes and putting together our own version of madness, a 64-person bracket that will produce some interesting matchups.

Beginning tomorrow you will have the ability to go on shoresportsnetwork.com and vote and over the next few weeks we will reduce the field from 64 to 32 to 16 to 8.  In early April we will have our own version of a final four and eventually the public will decide the Jersey Shore’s Greatest Sports Personality of the last 50 years.

The word “personality” has confused some as ultimately we are looking for the greatest sports figure although having an interesting personality won’t hurt.

Our search is sponsored by Sonny’s Recycling of Waretown and the winner will receive a special award from Ocean Trophies of Lanoka Harbor.

By the way. I will be honest and tell you that I will be among the 64 based on number of votes and whether deserving or not will be part of the bracket.  However my chances of advancing are about the same as say Radford beating Villanova.
