The Governor spoke at a Republican tax conference headed by former President George W. Bush.

Christie told the panel that you can’t start pro-growth tax policies, like Bush’s 4% Growth Project, without first getting your fiscal house in order.

The governor spent much of the speech recapping his first two budget, pension and health benefit reform and the 2% cap on property taxes.

“We were able to do that because we developed relationships with the other side of the aisle that allowed them to trust us and that doesn’t happen overnight.”

Christie said if you can do these things in New Jersey, you can do them anywhere, particularly in Washington, D.C.

“What the country needs again is leadership that is not afraid to take no for an answer…I’m not here to make friends, I’m here to get things done.”

Christie also touched on national policy, saying this is the least optimistic period he’s ever seen because government is telling Americans to “stop dreaming.”

State Democratic leaders criticized the remarks, saying Christie was catering to his conservative audience at the expense of working-class New Jerseyans.
