Peter Schlendorf
Peter Schlendorf (Townsquare Media NJ)

The first month of the major league baseball season is not yet complete but I can tell you this. The Yankees are better than expected, the Mets are in big trouble and the Phillies are building something towards the future.

The only team with more injury concerns than the Mets is the fantasy team I co-own with Joe Arminio, the athletic director for the Toms River Regional School District.  We have five players on the disabled list and another hurt as well. Not that you should care.

The Philadelphia Art Museum is the backdrop for tonight’s NFL Draft which will take place in the “city of brotherly love” for the first time since 1961 when it was at the Warwick Hotel.  As many as 200,000 people are expected to flock to Ben Franklin Parkway and it will be interesting to see and hear their reaction when the Eagles make the 14th pick in the first round.  As far as the other local teams, the Jets have the #6 pick and the Giants choose 23rd in the opening round.

Lacrosse is clearly an up-and-coming sport in the shore area and a couple of seniors turned in memorable performances Wednesday.  Donovan Catholic’s Peter Schlendorf scored 9 goals and added 5 assists in the Griffins 19-6 rout of Barnegat.

The 14-point effort was the highest by a player in New Jersey this season and the tied for the third most in the nation. It also allowed Schlendorf to top the 250 point mark for his career.  Not to be lost was the effort by Manasquan’s Jarrett Birch who also scored 9 goals and contributed 3 assists as the Warriors rolled past Lacey 19-3.  Quite a day for both players.

Rough financial times for ESPN resulted in more than 100 reporters, writers and other on-air staff members let go Wednesday, many of them high-profile personalities.  Rumors of the cost-cutting moves had been rampant for months as the sports network deals with rising programming costs and the loss of nearly 10 million subscribers over the last five years as pay TV customers cut the cord.
