A good Samaritan who attempted to stop an domestic assault along Route 40 in Mays Landing Thursday morning is in critical condition after being assaulted himself.

According to Hamilton Township Police, the scene unfolded just before 11:00 Thursday morning along Route 40 at Cantillion Boulevard. Cops say 24-year-old Calvin Wiggins of Sicklerville was engaged in a domestic violence incident with his girlfriend at the intersection. An unidentified person was passing by when he witnessed the assault and stopped to help. Officers say as he was exiting his car, Wiggins punched the man in the face and he fell to the ground; he suffered critical injuries. A second vehicle also stopped to assist and struck a street sign which punctured the fuel tank resulting in a fuel spill.

The good samaritian was taken to the ARMC Trauma Center in Atlantic City where he was last reported to be in critical condition. Wiggins was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, and possession of marijuana. Wiggins was lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility for the listed charges as well as a parole detainer.
