We’ve experienced Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. Today is not about the deals we get but rather those we help.

#GivingTuesday was started in 2012 as the anti-commercial response to the post-Thanksgiving shopping period in which the true spirit of the holiday season is often lost.  In just five years what has been created is an international day of giving with much of it fueled through social media and collaboration.

The idea is for today to kick-start end-of-year giving which is often vital for so many non-profits and charitable causes.  It can be as simple as a donation to an organization or individual in need or commitment of your time and energy for a project in your community.  While it may be too late to try and organize something for this year I can offer two examples of philanthropic efforts being spearheaded by two of Townsquare Media’s radio stations today.

“Shawn and Sue’s Making Miracles Radiothon” airs on 92.7 WOBM until 5pm today and will take place at the IHOP Restaurant on Route 88 in Brick with the goal to raise funds and awareness for the Children’s Miracle Network and Children’s Specialized Hospital in Toms River.  You can donate by stopping by to see Shawn & Sue at the Brick IHOP, make a pledge by calling (732) 237-9626 or through our website, wobm.com.

Meanwhile 94.3 The Point will be broadcasting until 8pm tonight from the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank to support their 2017 Sensory Friendly Series which presents sensory-friendly performances for autistic children and their families. Donations will be matched dollar for dollar by the Jay & Linda Grunin Foundation up to $25,000 which will also support POAC Autism Services.  You can learn more and make a donation at 943thepoint.com.

Of course you can participate by supporting any non-profit or charitable cause today because as we know it is better to give then receive.
