Routine maintenance work from New Jersey Natural Gas may cause a stench in the air. Company officials say there's absolutely nothing to worry about.

The utility company is conducting safety inspections and operations on a 20 inch transmission line. It is in the area along Route 70 from Whitesville Road to the Lakewood Cogeneration plant near Exit 88 off the Garden State Parkway. Spokesman Mike Kinney says continuing today through Friday, they will de-pressurize this line, which will safely expel natural gas into the atmosphere. Those in the immediate area may notice significant noise and odor.

Kinney adds the utility performs this routine maintenance on a regular basis, but if you do smell large amounts of gas inside your home, call 1-800-GAS-LEAK.
