SAYREVILLE — The Garden State Parkway opens its first E-ZPass-only exit this weekend.

Exit 125 for Chevalier Avenue and Main Street Extension in Sayreville is located before the Raritan toll plaza on the southbound side and will open at 6 a.m. Sunday. The opening was delayed from Saturday because of the possibility of rain that would prevent new stripes from being painted on the roadway.

The exit uses an E-ZPass gantry to register the tolls.

Cash tolls will still get to exit at 124 and pay their toll at the Raritan toll plaza.

The exit was designed so that cars wouldn't try to avoid the $1.50 toll at the Raritan Plaza.

There are several E-ZPass-only interchanges on the Atlantic City Expressway but none on the Parkway or New Jersey Turnpike. Spokesman Thomas Feeney said no others are expected to open soon.

Other improvements coming to the interchange include widening the Parkway in both directions over Chevalier Avenue, improving local roads, adding a northbound entrance ramp and reconfiguring the existing southbound ramp. The entrance ramps will be not be tolled.

The project cost more than $72 million.
