I’m going to touch on a few things this morning which starts of course with the New York Mets who are now just one win away from their first World Series in fifteen years.

All Mets fans are gaga over Daniel Murphy who has tied a record by homering in five straight playoff games and playing at a simply ridiculous level. He is also in the final year of his contract and this recent power surge has most Mets fans (including my wife) insisting the team must sign him.

As great as Murphy has been these last two weeks I’ve watched him long enough to know he’s a player with major flaws. A well-below average defensive player and maybe the worst base runner I’ve ever seen. My guess is his recent performance will have several teams throwing big money his way and when free agency begins it won’t be long before he’s headed elsewhere. For now let’s just hope he keeps it up and leads the Amazin’s to the World Series.

Congratulations to the Toms River South Girls Soccer team who earlier this week beat rival Toms River North 2-0 to clinch the Class A South championship for the third straight year and fourth time in the last five years. Coach John Crowley’s Indians swept the season-series from the Mariners and those are the only two losses North has suffered this season.

In Monday’s clincher Katie Hammack scored both goals and Taylor Dean recorded the shutout. South is the #9 seed in the Shore Conference Tournament and will host #24 Barnegat later today in an opening round game. North by the way is seeded 3rd and drew an opening round bye. Undefeated Colts Neck is the top seed.

The Shore Conference Boys Soccer Tournament also gets underway this week with Shore and CBA the top two seeds in a field of 27 teams. At #6 Toms River South is the highest ranked team from Ocean County and they will host Point Beach tonight in what is the second part of a girls/boys doubleheader.

I’m doing something a bit special tonight which will force me to miss the Mets game. You probably won’t hear about it tomorrow because I might sleep late but if not I’ll sure mention in Friday. Of course if you follow me on Twitter @shoresportsman then I’ll fill you in tonight.

And a final thought on Lamar Odom. It seems the world would better be served if they saved their prayers for someone more deserving.
