It may have taken Pitman two hours to find its way to the Pine Belt Arena but it only took a matter of minutes to know that the South Jersey section champs had no intention of being the Garnett Gulls 30th victim this winter.  The Panthers used a suffocating defense and clutch free throws to collect a 47-36 victory which ended the Garnett Gulls season.

Notre Dame-bound Matt Farrell scored 18 points in his final game for the Beach, who will find out next season what life will be like without Farrell,  Iowa-bound Dom Uhl, Noah Yates who is on his way to Yale to play football and 6’8 Jeff Bryant.  The winningest season in school history saw Point Beach claim the Class B Central and Central Jersey Group 1 titles for the second straight year along with the first Shore Conference Tournament championship in school history.

The girls teams from Manasquan, St. John Vianney and St. Rose will be spending some quality time this weekend at the Pine Belt Arena as they seek overall state titles.  Manasquan continued its tremendous late-season with a 17-point win over Cedar Creek and will face either Newton or Weequahic in the Group 2 final Sunday in Toms River.  St. John Vianney and St. Rose will face opponents for Non-Public championships in separate games on Saturday.

The Shore Coaches Association Senior All-Star Basketball games have been re-scheduled for Friday, March 28th at Wall High School.  The boys and girls doubleheader was originally set for next Wednesday but game organizers only recently learned that no All-Star game can be played until the Tournament of Champions is completed with that scheduled for Monday, March 21st in Trenton.

Two-time Pro Bowl receiver Miles Austin was released by the Dallas Cowboys Wednesday just a couple of weeks after having his number retired at his alma mater, Monmouth University.  The soon-to-be 30 year old suffered through a pair of injury-plagued seasons after signing a six-year, $54 million contract.  The Jets were among the teams said to be interested in Austin but that might have changed after they agreed to terms with former Bronco Eric Decker last night.
