End of Summer Bucket List

Kite Night at Seaside Park
Kite Night at Seaside Park (Jim Buffum)

The days are getting shorter and there are only three more weekends left before Labor Day.  I’ve tried but I can’t do anything about it. Summer is winding down.

Remember a few months ago when you said this was going to be the summer you were finally going to do things and not waste all those sunny days and beautiful nights.  Well what are you waiting for as there’s still time to:

  • Spend an afternoon at Monmouth Park, one of the country’s majestic race tracks. Best bet is to bring a cooler with food and drink, get their early and find one of the open picnic areas.  Bring the family and bet your favorite names, numbers and colors and have a great time.
  • Bring your appetite and spend a couple of hours strolling the boardwalk in Seaside Heights/Park. There is plenty of food options to choose from but at the very least have a bite of pizza from the Sawmill, Three Brothers from Italy and Maruca’s where of course it’s actually called “tomato pie.”
  • If you’re going to try the new Hydrus roller coaster on Casino Pier you might want to do that before diving into the pizza.
  • Go fly a kite! Every Wednesday on the 7th Avenue Beach in Seaside Park they hold “Kite Nights” and it has become incredibly popular as the sky is filled with colorful kites of all shapes and sizes.  Officially it takes place from 6 p.m. -8 p.m. but many stay longer and watch the fireworks in neighboring Seaside Heights.  The last “Kite Night” is August 30th.
  • Enjoy a day and night on the beach and boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach.
  • That of course means taking advantage of all the offerings at Jenkinson’s, including the arcade and aquarium and grabbing a cocktail at Martell’s Tiki Bar.
  • Catch a Lakewood BlueClaws game…there’s only 14 home games left at FirstEnergy Park before the season finale on Labor Day.
  • Take the kids on a true Pirate Island Adventure. ”Pirates On The Manasquan” sails everyday through Labor Day and weekends in the fall.
  • Take a ride to Long Beach Island and stop in for breakfast or wings at “Chicken or the Egg” in Beach Haven which locals call CHEGG by the way. Open 24 hours a day in the summer, expect lines at peak hours.
  • Spend a day at Island Beach State Park and then when your done visit Bum Roger’s Backyard for your favorite cocktail and an appetizer or two.

That’s a lot to do in three weeks…give it a shot.
