SANDY HOOK — A Hunterdon County couple found a bone on the beach at the Gateway National Recreation Area on Monday.

Daphne Yun, spokeswoman for the National Park Service, said a couple found the bone as they walked on the North Beach at Sandy Hook on Monday morning. They notified park personnel, who turned it over to Middletown Police to determine if the bone is human or animal, according to Yun.

"Things wash up on the beach," Yun said, but a bone is not something that has washed up in recent years.

Eric Decibus and Heather Rusczyk told the Asbury Park Press the bone was partially buried in the sand. Decibus said he sent a picture of the bone to a friend who is an orthopedic surgeon who said the bone was probably human.

Yun said the medical examiner's determination was not back from a medical examiner as of Tuesday morning.
