Beth P. Laurent, 39, of Oakhurst, faces aggravated assault, weapons-possession and criminal mischief charges connected to what police described as a predawn Sunday confrontation in her yard. Kristina L. Sterling, 23, of LIncroft, is charged with possession of heroin, Xanax, syringes and drug paraphernalia.

Officers responded to Laurent's Carol Avenue house at 4:43 AM on April 16, police said, finding Laurent holding a knife, along with a man who saw the incident.

Laurent submitted to arrest, then officers tracked down Sterling, who had run from the yard, police said.

According to investigators, an argument began inside the house. Sterling entered the yard, followed by a knife-brandishing Laurent to opened a gash on her arm. Sterling was driven to Jersey Shore University Medical Center by Oakhurst first-aiders, and was released after treatment.

Both were processed at police headquarters and remanded to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution (MCCI) in Freehold to await initial court appeances, police said.

Involved in the response, arrest and investigation were Police Officers Jeffrey Algor, John Goncalves, Nicholas Castellano, Cory Cole, and Trevor Dickerson, Sergeant Timothy Macom, and Detectives Gregory Martone and Chris Brady.

Charges are accusations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless, and until, found guilty in a court of law.
