There is little argument that Detweiler Stadium at Toms River High School South provides the best overall atmosphere for a football game anywhere at the shore.

Regardless of how good the Indians are fans, including many alumni, pack the stands week in and week out to cheer on the maroon and white in a cozy setting with the field surrounded by the high school on one side and the Ocean County Jail on the other. Quite interesting.

What was not charming about the setting in recent years were the bleachers on the home side which had more than worn out their welcome.  That’s been taken care of and when South hosts down-the-street rival Donovan Catholic in the season-opener on September 11th Indian fans will be sitting in new grandstands that will seat nearly 500 more people.  In addition a new press box was installed yesterday that looks like something you might find at a college stadium and there will be two new bathrooms.

If all goes well the Shore Sports Network will christen that press box as we are scheduled to broadcast the September 11th opener against the Griffins.  Word is Donovan Catholic will take a page out of the South playbook and led by bagpipers march down Hooper Avenue in grand fashion before arriving on the field to play the game.

Following minor knee surgery this summer freshman Tymere Berry out of Toms River South is back on the practice field for Monmouth University.  I talked to Tymere during media day on Thursday and he feels good and is hoping to make an impact with the Hawks in his first season in a new position at wide receiver.

Ice hockey might be the last thing on your mind in the heat and humidity of August but the Jersey Shore is no stranger to All Star games during the summer months.

Sunday afternoon the inaugural Asbury Park Press All-Star Hockey Classic will be held at Middletown Ice World and it features 42 of the top high school players in Ocean and Monmouth counties.  The game is presented by Trinity Sports & Entertainment Management and sponsors include the New Jersey Devils.  One team will be made up of players from Class A North and B North schools with the other a collection of outstanding talent from Class A South and A Central.

The puck drops at 4pm but doors open a 2 and among those expected to be on hand for a free autograph session are former Devil Grant Marshall and ex-Ranger tough guy Nick Fotiu.  There will be a gift raffle featuring autographed sports memorabilia and all proceeds from that and the $10 admission will benefit the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Kitchen of Red Bank and Toms River.
