A little of this and a little of that on what is the 47th anniversary of the Jets winning the only Super Bowl in franchise history.

It was on this date in 1969 that Joe Namath guided the Jets to a stunning upset of my beloved Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III in what is considered one of the most important games in pro football history. I was an 8th grader at Central Regional and so confident the Colts would win the game I bet dozens of students and teachers anywhere from a dollar to five dollars.

The next day I tried to convince my mother I was too sick to go to school but she knew I was sick for another reason and made me get on the bus and face the fire. What a horrible day and memory.

As the presidential race heats up two Republicans have been cut from the main stage for Thursday’s debate in Charleston, South Carolina hosted by Fox Business Network. Senator Rand Paul and Carly Fiorina did not qualify for the main event which will feature 7 candidates: Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Ben Carson, Jeb Bush, John Kasich and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

If you missed Ciara performing the National Anthem before Monday night’s College Football Championship game you missed both her amazing voice and somewhat revealing dress which many felt was inappropriate for a college football game. The 30-year old beauty is dating Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson who sent out a message on Twitter after her performance saying “I see you baby!! Sounded amazing & looked flawless in every way!” Hard to disagree.

Speaking of flawless Nick Saban added to his coaching legacy with a daring onside kick call early in the 4th quarter that sparked Alabama to a 45-40 win over Clemson in a thoroughly entertaining game that did not end until 12:19 this morning. I’ll be paying for that all day today. Saban has won five national championships, including four in the last 7 years at Alabama and clearly is somewhere at the very top of the list when it comes the greatest coaches in college football history.

The Monmouth University “bench mob” got more air time on ESPN’s “Sportscenter” early this morning following the Hawks come-from-behind win at Fairfield Monday. Monmouth is now 12-4 overall with their next home game Monday, January 18th against Iona, who is atop the MAAC standings.
