Catching Up On The Weekend

A little of this and a little of that after a spectacular weekend which saw summer officially come to an end and fall arrive.

Two of my favorite TV shows came away the big winners at last night’s 64^th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.  “Homeland” swept the major awards in the Drama category including Best Series with Claire Danes and Damian Lewis taking home Emmys as Best Actress and Actor.

Unless you have Showtime you’re probably unaware of the show which debuted last fall and is a nail-biting thriller about a US Marine who has been turned against his own country by terrorists.  The show is simply tremendous and the second season of 12 episodes begins this Sunday.

Meanwhile “Modern Family” won its third straight Emmy as Best Comedy series with Julie Bowen and Eric Stonestreet also claiming wins in the Supporting Actress and Actor categories.  Stonestreet, who plays “Cam” in the show, had to beat out three of his co-stars in the hilarious comedy to claim his second Emmy.

Other big winners last night included Jon Cryer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Louis C.K. and the HBO movie “Game Change” and its star Julianne Moore.  Jimmy Kimmel did a good job of moving along the telecast which seemed more concerned about ending exactly at 11am than anything else…it did.

After catching only one pass in his first two years with the Houston Texans it looks like things will be different for former Brick Memorial standout Garrett Graham this season.  The ex-Mustang caught 2 passes for 39 yards in Sunday’s win over Denver and is getting more and more playing time and becoming a bigger part of the Texans attack.  Graham, 6’3, 244 pound tight end who had an outstanding career at the University of Wisconsin, was married this summer.

He’ll be coming east with the rest of his teammates in two weeks when they play the Jets in the Meadowlands. His brother Ryan is an assistant coach at Brick Memorial which like Houston is off to a 3-0 start.

I find it kind of funny that coaches, players and fans want so badly for the regular NFL referees to return and the replacement officials to go away.  Eventually it will happen and in no time the love affair with the regular officials will go away and people will say they’re not much better than the replacement ones.  At least the games should go a bit faster because right now some seem endless.

Did anyone notice the Mets swept a weekend series from the Marlins?  I didn’t think so.
