Many of us have speculated that Barnegat Bay and other waterways must be loaded with debris from Superstorm Sandy and wondered just how they would get things cleaned up in time for the summer boating season.

Well so far it would appear that maybe things are not as bad as many had feared as the cleanup is well underway and on schedule.  The company doing the job has removed a Mercedes Benz sedan, pieces of houses, docks and just one refrigerator in the bay from the Mantoloking Bridge north to the Manasquan Inlet.  There’s plenty of work left to be done but officials are optimistic that area waterways will be in good shape by summer.

A changing of the guard is coming when it comes to a pair of high-profile law enforcement positions in Ocean County.  The State Senate is expected to vote to approve Joseph Coronato as the new prosecutor next week and at the same time approve outgoing prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford as a judge of the Superior Court.  The 61-year old Coronato is a well-known attorney in Toms River who was nominated for the post last June.  Meanwhile in a move that’s been expected for some time it appears Toms River Police Chief Mike Mastronardy is going to be the next Ocean County Sheriff.

Mastronardy was unanimously nominated earlier this week by county Republican leaders to be their candidate in the November election to replace William Polhemus, who died three months ago.  However Governor Christie is expected to appoint Mastronardy to the sheriff’s post on an interim basis in the near future.  Both he and Coronato are excellent choices to fill the two positions and it should be a smooth transition.

Count me among those who expected the season to end last night for the Point Pleasant Beach girl’s basketball team.  However the Group 1 state champs pulled off what many consider a major upset by beating Trenton Catholic 74-68 in the quarterfinals of the Tournament of Champions at the Pine Belt Arena.  Katelynn Flaherty as brilliant with 36 points while partner in crime Marina Mabry added 29 to advance the 26-1 Garnett Gulls into the semi-finals against top-seed Shabazz on Thursday night in Toms River.

Tonight at 8pm the Point Beach boys make their TOC debut as an underdog against an Atlantic City team that has ousted Toms River South, Southern and Toms River North during their state tournament run.
