FAIRFIELD — Tim Zyla's wife would have been a perfect match, until she suffered a recent, freak accident at the gym. He doesn't want his kids to donate in case one of their siblings needs the same procedure. So the veteran fireman is casting a wide net for a kidney donor to deliver a holiday miracle.

Zyla suffers from polycystic kidney disease, which is a genetic and degenerative condition that can lead to failure of the organ, NBC New York reported. The former Fairfield fire chief and a current firefighter in West Caldwell, Zyla has been told he could wait the standard five to seven years for a kidney and go on dialysis if necessary in the interim, but given how close he's come to a transplant, he doesn't want to run the risk of not being able to see his kids grow up.

"I'd like to walk them down the aisle," NBC quoted him saying. said. "The clock is ticking, and I don't know when it ends."

If you would like to find out if you are a match for Tim Zyla, call the St. Barnabas Hospital Living Donor Institute at 973-322-5346.
