It was two weeks ago that I told you about the JBJ Soul Kitchen which is part of the B.E.A.T. Center on Hooper Avenue in Toms River.  The community restaurant serves paying customers and those who are in-need and it’s open for dinner Wednesday through Saturday and serves a Sunday brunch.

I’m back today to spread the word about their Chili Cook-Off which is scheduled for next Saturday (October 22) from noon to 2pm but comes with a twist. The Soul Kitchen is seeking local fire, police and EMS workers to show off their cooking talents in a friendly competition of first responder “Chili Chefs.”

Whether you are entering as an individual or representative of your department or squad you are cooking for bragging rights although there will be prizes as well.  The concept of the Chili Cook-Off is to introduce the JBJ Soul Kitchen to more people in our area while also highlighting the great contributions first responders make in our communities.

Next Saturday’s event is open to the public with a $10 donation which allows people to taste and vote for the best chili of the day.  No tickets are being sold in advance so you simply show up between noon-2 p.m. Obviously the goal is for the participating fire, police and EMS chili cooks to have co-workers or fellow volunteers support their efforts.

In addition to a cash first prize the JBJ Soul Kitchen will donate a portion of the net proceeds to Hope Sheds Light in honor of the work they do to bring awareness, resources and hope to families dealing with the disease of addiction.

Those first responders interested in participating in the JBJ Soul Kitchen Chili Cook-Off can call 732-731-1414 or send an email to info@jbjsoulkitchen.org
