The Ocean County Columbus Day Parade and Italian Festival takes place in Seaside Heights this Friday through Saturday. Despite several other events rescheduled for this weekend in the wake of Hurricane Joaquin and the Nor'easter, organizers are still hoping to attract an event bigger crowd.

Instead of viewing the other events, including Chowderfest on Long Beach Island and the Zombie Walk in Asbury Park, as competition, Michael A. Blandina, Columbus Day Parade Chairman, considers it an opportunity for the Italian Festival.

"I think it's an opportunity for us to reach a new group of people that not necessarily would have been there ordinarily," said Blandina.

A folkloric group from Italy will be performing throughout the three-day festival.

"I think it's an added plus that we're going to have more people there hopefully," Blandina said. He's also confident Sunday's parade will top any other events going on that day.

"I expect a huge crowd this weekend and I think those other events are going to help us out," Blandina said.

Blandina added they're always looking for volunteers and pointed out he's willing to write letters for any high school or college students looking for community service credits.

Those interested can call Blandina directly, at 732-477-6507, visit the event website at http://www.columbusnj.org/default.htm and send an email to info@columbusnj.org, or go to the Columbus Day booth in the center of the street during the festival. He also said organizers will be in Seaside Heights Wednesday and Thursday afternoon setting up.
