Brick Township felon’s father admits murder scheme, faces up to 10 years

The Nevada-based father of an alleged DeCavalcante crime family associate from Brick Township faces up to 10 years in prison, for his role in an aborted murder scheme.

Charles Stango, 72, of Henderson, Nevada, pleaded guilty in Newark to federal charges of knowingly using an interstate facility - a phone - with the intent of murder. He has a scheduled sentencing date of March 28, 2017.

He also pleaded guilty to violating terms of parole obligations after his release from prison on racketeering counts, according to the office of New Jersey U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman. The penalty also carries a possible fine as high as $250,000.

Stango was one of 10 arrested in an April 2015 sweep that targeted the DeCavalcante operation in New Jersey and elsewhere.

His son, Anthony Stango of Brick, was sentenced in January 2016 on charges related to narcotics, prostitution and weapons. Five others have taken guilty please to simliar charges

Stango told the court that he used to phone to plan the murder of a criminal rival. In recorded evidence, Stango claimed to doubt the intended victim's status as a "made man," and asserted that the target insulted a high-ranking member of the organization.

According to investigators, Stango offered up to $50,000 to two undercover FBI agents who convinced him that they were assassins.

Stango was represented by Assistant Federal Public Defender Chester Keller of Newark. The government's case was handled by Senior Litigation Counsel V. Grady O'Malley, and Assistant U.S. Attorney James Donnelly.
