BRICK — Students and staff are remembering a sophomore killed in a late-night crash as he rode his bicycle crossing Route 70 on Saturday night.

"This is a great tragedy for the Brick Memorial school community, and we send our deepest sympathies to the family," Brick schools wrote in an email sent to parents on Sunday night about the death of Drew Aponte.

That statement and information by police did not identify Aponte directly, but Brick Patch cited another separate statement from the school system that did.

The email also said counselors would be available at the school until 2 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Brick Police said Aponte was struck by a 2017 Subaru Forrester as he crossed Route 70 at Burnt Tavern Road around 10:45 p.m. driven by Kathleen Calabro, 68, of Toms River. A makeshift memorial was created at the intersection in Aponte's memory.

Police said Monday they do not anticipate any charges in the crash.

Brick Acting Superintendent Dennis Filippone has not yet returned messages seeking comment.

Aponte played football as a freshman but did not return for another season, according to the Shore Sports Network.

Brick police asked witnesses to call 732-262-1140 with any information about the incident.
