Berkeley Township steps up gun safety efforts

Municipalities and law enforcement agencies across the state continue developing new ways or joining in efforts that focus on gun safety.

Berkeley Township is now participating in a program of the National Shooting Sports Foundation called "Project Child Safe" which promotes safety and education of guns.

"Police Chief Karin DiMichele and I are committed to firearm safety in our community," Berkeley Township Mayor Carmen Amato said. "We are pleased to offer FREE firearm safety kits to the residents of Berkeley Township."

The safety kits being offered to the community feature gun locks and educational reading guides on the safest ways to handle firearms.

"If you own a firearm, please practice responsible gun ownership by using a gun lock and storing your firearms away from children," DiMichele said.

"We encourage our residents to continue to keep our township safe and take advantage of this free program," Amato said.

If you're interested in picking up one of these free kits, head over to the Police Department on Pinewald-Keswick Road in the Bayville section of the township and then speak with the Records Bureau upon entry to the building.

The window hours are 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.
