I could talk about driving pet peeves for days but one that frustrates more drivers than any other has to be those that ignore the age-old rule, “keep right except to pass.” Another simple way to describe this as those SOB’s who refuse to vacate the left lane and frustrate the heck out of the rest of us.
Granted we had a very mild winter but the first four weeks of spring have for the most part felt winter-like. That is clearly ending as the long-awaited warm up has arrived and that was obvious this weekend.
It started in 2013 with four teams playing a pair of games for a noble cause and it has grown into one of the highlights of the high school baseball season. The Baseball Gods will shine brightly tomorrow on ten locations in Ocean and Monmouth County as they are hosting games as part of this year’s Strike Out Autism Challenge.
They have become a summertime staple at the Jersey Shore just like boardwalks, Barnegat Lighthouse, Salt Water Taffy and the Stone Pony. It’s hard to believe it was 15 years ago this week that the BlueClaws took the field in Lakewood for their inaugural home opener.
For many high school and college athletes the success they had on the field and court is really the highlight of their lives. Far too many put all their time and effort into throwing a football or shooting a basketball and never took the academic part of school very seriously. I knew long ago that would not be the case with Todd Durkin, a gifted student-athlete at Brick Township High School who I took a special interest in while covering as a sportscaster in the late 1980s.
I saw it with Al Leiter at Central Regional High School in 1984 and J.M. Gold fourteen years later at Toms River North. Now in 2016 the throng of major league scouts and other officials are focused on another Ocean County hurler whose pitching appearances are taking on a life of their own.
I was locked into the final round of the Master’s yesterday like many others and when Jordan Spieth opened up a 5-shot lead after the front nine I figured it was over. Then in front of millions of eyes the wheels started coming off
You might be depressed about another weekend that will feel more like winter than spring but be assured this should be the last stretch of winter-like weather as spring is about to arrive and stay. I have no idea why I led with this but it seemed like a good idea.
The simple definition of "united" is “involving people or groups working together to achieve something” or “made up of members who share the same purpose, interest, etc.” I say this because the United States of America seem less united than at any point in recent memory and it’s something we should be concerned about.
For all the criticism heaped upon Donald Trump (and much of it deserved) what some career politicians fail to realize is many Americans endorse him because he has brought up issues they care about. And of course he’s not a career politician.
