Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo has announced that he will be running for the 2nd District state senate seat being vacated by retiring Senator Jim Whelan this fall.

In a statement released on Thursday, Mazzeo said,

"I am proud to announce my candidacy for state Senate and thank Senator Whelan for his distinguished career in public service. Today, Atlantic County is facing historic economic challenges.  In many ways, we stand at a crossroads and I am committed to rolling up my sleeves as I do every day running a successful small business to do the hard work necessary to ensure our best days are ahead of us."

Mazzeo has been representing the 2nd Legislative District in the Assembly since 2014. Prior to that, he served as mayor of Northfield from 2008 through 2014.

Mazzeo's announcement comes on the heals of State Senator Jim Whelan's announcement that he will not be running for re-election this fall.
