After dumbbell incident on Turnpike, hammer hits car on Parkway

WOODBRIDGE — For the second time this month, a flying heavy object has crashed into a car on a major state highway, injuring the driver.

State Police said a hammer went through the windshield of Lexus ES on Thursday afternoon on the Garden State Parkway.

The incident comes a day after a man died from injuries sustained Jan. 9 when a 50-pound dumbbell crashed through his windshield on the New Jersey Turnpike in South Jersey.

Police said the Parkway incident happened between the Metropark and Clark/Westfield exits. Bloomfield Station troopers responded about 3:21 p.m. and said the driver did not need medical attention for his minor injuries.

Other details were not immediately available Thursday evening.

Police on Thursday also said that they have not found any evidence that the earlier incident with the dumbbell was intentional. It is not clear where the dumbbell came from.

Jack Decarlo, of Hamilton in Mercer County, died Wednesday night at Crozer Chester Hospital in Pennsylvania. The weight had hit his head and his car wound up in a ditch off the Turnpike in Oldman.
