A year and a day for Toms River doctor who admitted taking bribes

The Toms River doctor who admitted taking money to steer blood samples to two testing labs is given the same prison term as the man who paid him.

In Camden, osteopath Vincent Destasio, 55, was sentenced to a year and a day, according to the office of New Jersey U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman. He pleaded guilty to a federal count of conspiracy to accept cash bribes.

Destasio was also ordered to serve two years of parole supervision, pay a $1,000 fine and enter a forfeiture judgement of $25,000.

The sentencing took place one day after Daniel Gilman, 63, of Ocean Grove, was handed his prison term for supplying the bribes to Destasio.

Investigators alleged that Gilman and his partner Kenneth Robberson, 47, paid Destasio to send blood samples to labs they represented through their PROMED marketing and sales concern.

Operators of the labs paid monthly commissions to Gilmand and Robberson, and were never aware of the payoffs, that investigators said continued from March 2014 through May 2015.

Robberson, who also entered a guilty plea, has sentencing scheduled for October 5.
