Yesterday was Ash Wednesday which begins a 40-day period of prayer and fasting leading up to Easter Sunday and observed by many Catholics and other Christians. It was also the first day of lent in which many pledge to give up a luxury item which often comes in the form of food or drink like candy, soda, ice cream, etc.

With the advent of things like Facebook and Twitter some like to share their so-called sacrifice and most I saw were fairly typical. However my favorite in terms of creativity comes from my friend Lucia, who owns Built Rite Windows in Toms River. For lent this year she has chosen to give up winter. Don’t know how the Pope will feel but I certainly like it.

Quite a night for the Central Regional Boys & Girls Basketball teams in the NJSIAA Tournament Wednesday. The boys edged Winslow Township 63-62 in overtime thanks to free throw by Evan Laing in the final seconds and advanced to the South Jersey Group 3 semifinals against top-seed Mainland Friday. Meanwhile in the girl’s tournament the 4th Golden Eagles outlasted Toms River South 41-39 in double overtime and will visit top-seed Timber Creek Friday.
