Three local sports notes make up today’s segment but before I get to them I want to congratulate the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore on another successful golf classic at Manasquan River Golf Club.

I served as Master of Ceremonies for the post-golf dinner which also honored CentraState Healthcare Foundation.  George Campbell, Jan Kirsten and Nina Anuario served as co-chairs for the event with an assist from State Senator Jennifer Beck.

I was only interested in Monday’s Home Run Derby because Toms River’s Todd Frazier was seeking to defend his title but to be honest it was quite a night in San Diego.  Frazier as usual did not disappoint as he advanced to the finals for the third straight year but the White Sox star fell short as he was beaten by Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton in the finals 20-13.

Stanton put on a show hitting 20 of the 21 longest home runs during the derby at Petco Park and while totally overhyped the event nonetheless was a fun one.

It was 18 years ago at this time that Frazier was in the process of leading Toms River East American to the District 18 Little League Championship which was their first step on the way to winning the World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.  The district, which is made up of 12 Little Leagues in Ocean County, will decide its champion tonight when Holbrook hosts Jackson in a winner-take-all showdown.

In the first championship game last night it was Holbrook (Jackson) coming back from a 7-0 deficit to win 12-8 behind a power display from Gavin Bonitz, who belted two home runs including a grand slam in the 4th inning.  It was the first loss in the tournament for Jackson who makes the short trip again tonight to their local rival with the winner headed to the Section 3 Tournament in Freehold Township.

With the state of horse racing as it is today Monmouth Park will take any good news they can get and they received very good news Monday.  For the second straight year the Kentucky Derby winner is headed to Oceanport as “Nyquist” will make his next start in the $1 million Betfair.com Haskell Invitational on July 31st.

Last year a record crowd of some 60,000 watched Triple Crown winner “American Pharaoh” capture the Haskell.

Townsquare Media intern David Wintrode talked with Holbrook manager Art Bonitz after last night’s win over Jackson:
