If ever there was a day to buy sub from Jersey Mike’s then today is it.

Not just because they make great sandwiches; my favorites are the Club Supreme, Tuna and Famous Philly Cheese Steak subs, but because today is their annual “Day of Giving” which involves all of the nearly 1,400 locations across the country.

Regardless of what you purchase all sales and not just profits will be donated to a charity that has partnered with that particular location.  Last year the one day total was a staggering $4.6 million and with more stores opening since it’s expected that this year should be even better.

Of course the Jersey Shore is where the franchise was born when then 17-year old Point Pleasant Beach High School senior Peter Cancro purchased Mike’s Subs which was in neighboring Point Pleasant and where he had worked for a few years.  Cancro, with the help of a local football coach/banker and a friend, borrowed the $125,000 needed to buy the sub store and things really took off more than a decade later when he began franchising.

While Jersey Mike’s is now a well-known national chain Cancro and many of his company executives have a special fondness for their home base with their company headquarters in Manasquan.  There are 31 locations in Monmouth and Ocean County and along with 29 others in parts of New Jersey the 60 will be donating all their sales today to Make-A-Wish New Jersey.

Last year that effort resulted in $263,000 going to the organization and allowing them to grant wishes to 28 local children with critical illnesses.

So when it’s time to think about lunch or dinner today or you drive by one of the shore-area locations stop in and buy a sub and a bag of chips.  It will taste good and you’ll feel even better about helping Jersey Mike’s make a difference.
