It is Veterans Day which is a public holiday to honor all of those who served in the United States Armed Forces. It is a state and federal holiday that does not affect most businesses. However the post office is closed and there will be no mail service.

Federal, state and local courts are closed, all Motor Vehicle Commission facilities are closed and most banks will also be closed to observe the holiday although all branches of TD Bank will be open.

The Ocean County Veterans Day Parade will be held on Monday beginning at 9:30 a.m. and will follow the same route as the Halloween Parade from a couple of weeks ago through downtown Toms River.  The parade was moved to Monday so the six bands from the Toms River Regional School District could participate as public schools in New Jersey are closed today due to the NJEA Convention.

The watered down and often controversial NJSIAA Football Playoffs begin tonight with 25 of the 43 Shore Conference teams sharing the goal of winning a state sectional title.  The six teams that did win championships last season are all back to try and make it two straight: Toms River North, Jackson Memorial, Middletown South, Rumson, Shore and Raritan.

TR North is in the midst of what could be a historic season and begins defense of its South Jersey Group 5 title at home tonight against Atlantic City in a game that the Shore Sports Network will broadcast on WOBM AM 1160 and 1310.  Brick, Point Boro and Point Beach all have home playoff games tonight while Southern travels to Rancocas Valley.

Coming off a 28-win season and full of optimism Monmouth University opens the basketball season tonight against Drexel at the OceanFirst Bank Center.  The Hawks are favored to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Association Conference and advance to the NCAA Tournament in March.
