A Boring Game On A Hot Night

Random thoughts and notes on a warm Wednesday.

Unless you appreciate good pitching baseball’s All-Star game was pretty boring although it did provide good some moments and drama with the American League snapping a three year losing streak and gaining home field advantage in the World Series thanks to a 3-0 victory.

You had 24-year old Matt Harvey of the Mets throwing two impressive innings as the National League starter of front of frenzied fans at CitiField.  Yankees fans held their breath after Harvey hit Robinson Cano with a fastball just above the right knee in the 1st inning and shortly after Cano had to leave the game.  However there was good news later in the announcement that x-rays were negative and Cano has a minor quadriceps injury and should be able to play Friday night in Boston.

Turns out the highlight of the night was Yanks relief great Mariano Rivera entering the game in the 8th inning to a standing ovation from not only the fans but all the players.  Rivera would pitch a 1-2-3 inning and in his final All-Star game appearance was named the MVP which was a fitting tribute for his career although he was not the MVP of the game.

Now comes two of the most boring days of the year as the regular season does not resume until Friday.  Of course you can chose to watch the ESPY Awards tonight if you have nothing better to do.

The All-Star break is a chance for Todd Frazier to return to his Toms River home and relax with his wife and family.  The Reds third baseman spent Tuesday on the beach in Seaside Park and was noticeable by his paleness. After a short time in the sun Todd sought the relief of an umbrella as the last thing he needs is to get a sun burn before returning to Cincinnati.

In his first full season as a starter Frazier is batting just .239 but does have 10 homers and his 43 RBI’s is third on the team.  The Reds are third in the National League Central Division standings but just five games out of first and if the season ended today they would earn the second wild card spot in the playoffs.  Frazier returns to Cincinnati tomorrow.

The Ocean and Monmouth County All-Stars will hold final practice sessions tonight in preparation for tomorrow’s U.S. Army All Shore Gridiron Classic at Toms River North.  Clearly hydration will be a major topic of discussion with temperatures expected into the mid to upper 90’s again tomorrow.

Kickoff is at 7pm and tickets will be sold at the gate.  The Shore Sports Network will broadcast the game on 105.7FM and at
