One resident was killed and a police officer was hospitalized after a fire broke out at a Howell trailer park.

Howell Township police tell the Asbury Park Press that the fire started shortly before 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Oak Hill Trailer Park. They say the entrance to the trailer was barricaded and, after officers forced the front door open, they were met by thick smoke.

Witnesses say firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze.

The man who lived in the trailer where the fire occurred was pronounced dead at the scene, but further details were not disclosed. No other park residents were injured.

Howell police officer John Lopez was treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation and later released

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
